Machine Learning for Environmental Grand Challenges

I’m honoured to be able to speak at this opening of the new CDT on AI for Environmental Risks here at the University of Cambridge. I’ll use my hour in two parts: to give a broad overview of the field, starting with the question of ‘what is machine learning?’ and leading to questions of what it means to build responsible technology. And then move to the second half to talk about the excitement I have in using Machine Learning to address some of our Environmental grand challenges, looking at the ways machine learning has been used for managing data centre energy use, renewable energy systems, prediction of sea surface temperatures and storm tracks, and wind and solar reflectivity.  There is so much to do in this space, by building deep interdisciplinary scientists and engineers as is being done at this CDT, we can make our contribution to addressing our global grand challenges.
